# How it Works

Decentralization might seem difficult, but Inheriti® simplifies it, delivering unparalleled security, efficiency and affordability.

<figure><img src="/files/mapX7y9bRDejPdl2Oxx0" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Now that you had [a first introduction to Inheriti®](/) and know what it is and who it's for, let’s dive into how it will help you to secure and protect your sensitive data.

Our process is straightforward but powerful, ensuring your peace of mind every step of the way.

## Step 1: Plan Your Protection

It all starts with setting up your [protection plan](/getting-started/protection-plans).

This isn't just any plan, but it's customized to fit your specific needs. Whether you're securing your crypto keys, passwords, business secrets or safeguarding family memories,

Inheriti® tailors your plan to ensure complete security:

* Decide who your trusted beneficiaries are.
* Choose where your data will be stored, from blockchain to physical devices and mobile phones.
* Select how your data should be accessed using our advanced [activation methods](/getting-started/activation-methods).

Your data’s safety begins in your browser and stays intact throughout its journey.

## Step 2: Encrypt and Split

Next, we take your data and fortify it. Using sophisticated encryption algorithms like AES-256 and Shamir’s Secret Sharing, your data is split into separate, secure pieces.

This means even if someone were to access a piece, they couldn't reconstruct your data without the other parts. It’s security that adapts to your needs, keeping your information intact and impenetrable.

## Step 3: Distribute Securely

Your encrypted data isn’t just stored somewhere centralized. It’s strategically distributed across various secure locations:

* Immutably on the [blockchain](/getting-started/blockchain) for transparency and security.
* In the cloud via [Inheriti® Vault](/getting-started/inheriti-r-vault) for accessibility.
* Via devices like [SafeKey Pro](/getting-started/safekey/safekey-pro) for offline security.
* Or directly on your mobile phone with [SafeKey Mobil](/getting-started/safekey/safekey-mobile)e for convenience.

This diversified multilayer storage approach ensures that there’s no single point of failure, enhancing the resilience of your data security.

## Step 4: Merge When Needed

When the time is right, whether it’s a planned transfer or an unexpected necessity, your [beneficiaries](/getting-started/beneficiaries) —or you, for your own backup plans — can securely retrieve the data via [the merging process](/getting-started/merging).

By combining the [encrypted plan shares](/getting-started/plan-shares) using the predefined conditions of the [activation methods](/getting-started/activation-methods), the data is reconstructed safely and accurately, just as intended.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Inheriti®'s Commitment to Security**\
At Inheriti®, security isn’t just a feature, it's embedded in every layer of our process. From the initial plan configuration to the final data retrieval, every step is designed to protect and empower you, your data, and your beneficiaries. Our innovative technology not only secures your digital assets but also ensures they are managed exactly as you wish, without compromise.

# Requirements

Getting started with Inheriti® involves a few essential requirements. This page outlines what you need to set up your protection plans effectively.

## **Mandatory Requirements**

### **SafeID Account**

To use both Inheriti® and SafeKey Mobile, you must first create a [SafeID](/getting-started/safeid) account. This account serves as a single sign-on for our ecosystem, and as your gateway to accessing and managing your protection plans securely.

If you sign up directly through Inheriti®,&#x20;

### **SafeKey Pro Device or SafeKey Mobile App**

Your [encrypted plan shares](/getting-started/plan-shares) are stored on a SafeKey device.

<table data-card-size="large" data-view="cards" data-full-width="false"><thead><tr><th></th><th></th><th data-type="content-ref"></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>SafeKey Pro (Suggested)</strong></td><td>A hardware device that provides cold storage for your encrypted shares, ensuring they remain secure offline.</td><td><a href="/pages/XVGa5ASSrGyAg3giVRjz">/pages/XVGa5ASSrGyAg3giVRjz</a></td></tr><tr><td><strong>SafeKey Mobile</strong></td><td>An app that allows you to manage your shares directly from your mobile device, offering convenience without compromising security.</td><td><a href="/pages/pJz1GuLgDolIFsbihlq5">/pages/pJz1GuLgDolIFsbihlq5</a></td></tr></tbody></table>

## Optional

### **Trusted Beneficiaries**

While not mandatory, adding trusted beneficiaries as [heirs or shareholders](/getting-started/beneficiaries) enhances the functionality of your protection plans. These individuals will be part of your plan, capable of accessing or inheriting data according to the conditions you’ve set for your activation methods.

### **Compatible Wallets for Web3 Payments**

If you choose to utilize Web3 features, you will need one of the [compatible wallets](/getting-started/payment-methods) to handle transactions and interactions within the blockchain environment directly.

### **SHA Tokens**

Possessing SHA tokens on one of the [compatible blockchains](/getting-started/blockchain), together with the native gas token of that blockchain, is needed if you choose to use Web3 features of Inheriti® and prefer to put your SHA tokens to use.

SHA tokens are integral to the operation of Inheriti®, as they are always needed to fuel the smart contracts that create protection plans. When you choose to pay with fiat, we use SHA from a dedicated pool to create your protection plan. To maintain this pool, a portion of the fiat payment is used to buy back SHA tokens.

However, if you already hold SHA tokens, you have the option to purchase a coupon with them. This coupon is then used to cover part of your setup fee, and the SHA tokens you contribute are added directly to the pool.

By using a coupon purchased with SHA, you effectively reduce the need for us to buy back tokens, and as a token of appreciation, you receive an additional 5% discount on the remaining cost of your protection plan.

This not only benefits you but also supports the overall utility of SHA.

# Glossary

## Protection Plans

A protection plan refers to the secure and decentralized method for users to safeguard their data in an encrypted manner via Inheriti®.

<table><thead><tr><th width="254"></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Data backup plan</strong></td><td>A protection plan that enables users to create decentralized backups of their digital data. It allows for the storage and protection of various types of information, similar to a digital inheritance plan. The plan owner has the option to be a shareholder and can determine mutiple shareholders. The plan is activated through the plan trigger method. </td></tr><tr><td><strong>Digital inheritance plan</strong></td><td>A protection plan designed for the inheritance of digital data. It allows the plan owner to designate heirs and a merge authority while utilizing the Dead Man Switch activation method to ensure secure transfer of assets.</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Main Roles

<table><thead><tr><th width="253"></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Plan owner / Plan initiator</strong></td><td>Refers to the individual who creates and has overall ownership and control of a specific protection plan.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Merge authority (MA)</strong></td><td>The merge authority is one of the beneficiaries (shareholders or heirs) responsible for initiating the merging process within a protection plan.</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Beneficiaries

Beneficiary is an overarching term used to refer to all individuals who hold [shares of a protection plan](#plan-shares). It encompasses designated individuals who are entitled to receive the benefits or assets specified in the protection plan.&#x20;

<table><thead><tr><th width="215"></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Heir</strong></td><td>An heir is a beneficiary designated to inherit digital assets within an inheritance plan.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Shareholder</strong></td><td>A shareholder is a specific type of beneficiary designated to have a share in the encrypted data backup within a backup plan.</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Plan Shares

Plan shares are created for each beneficiary in pairs. These shares contain encrypted and split portions of the secret data. Each beneficiary receives at least one package of two plan shares, allowing them to collectively access and recover the data.

<table><thead><tr><th width="218"></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Recovery Share</strong></td><td>Recovery shares are optional and can be added based on the number of shareholders involved. Like plan shares, recovery shares are created in pairs. They serve as a contingency measure in case a beneficiary loses their plan shares. Recovery shares are stored alongside the validator share in the same Inheriti® smart contract, providing an additional option for data recovery.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Validator Share</strong></td><td>The validator share is associated with the activation method chosen for the protection plan. This share remains securely stored in the Inheriti® smart contract until all specified activation methods are triggered. It is only released when the plan owner is confirmed deceased or has no objections to opening the protection plan. The validator share adds an additional layer of security and ensures proper authorization before accessing the protected data.</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Storage Layers

Inheriti® uses multiple storage layers to ensure enhanced security and decentralization.

To accomplish this, we use the [Secure Share Distribution Protocol](/technical/secure-share-distribution-protocol-ssdp) (SSDP). SSDP is a patented protocol, invented and utilized by Inheriti® for the secure distribution of shares or fragments of encrypted data to the designated [beneficiaries](#beneficiaries) of a protection plan.

<table><thead><tr><th width="216"></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Cold Storage</strong></td><td>SafeKey Pro acts as a secure cold storage device for storing the data shares of protection plans created via Inheriti® offline. </td></tr><tr><td><strong>Mobile Storage</strong></td><td>An alternative to the cold storage provided by SafeKey Pro. With SafeKey Mobile, you can securely store your shares of protection plans created with Inheriti® directly on your mobile phone. </td></tr><tr><td><strong>Cloud Storage</strong></td><td>Currently, Inheriti Vault® only temporarily stores mobile plan shares until claimed by beneficiaries through the SafeKey Mobile app. Once claimed, shares are removed from the vault.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Blockchain Storage</strong></td><td>Validator and recovery shares are stored securely on a blockchain, preventing unauthorized access to protection plans. The immutable nature of blockchain ensures authenticity and safety.</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Activation Methods

[Activation method](#activation-methods) is the overarching term to describe the methods employed within protection plans to initiate specific actions or events. Each activation method has a countdown timer that starts when the merge authority initiates the merging process.

All methods need to be triggered within their specified time to release the validator share and enable the merge authority to proceed with opening the protection plan.

<table><thead><tr><th width="192"></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Dead Man Switch</strong></td><td><p>The Dead Man Switch is an activation method used in inheritance plans. It serves as a verification mechanism to confirm the status of the plan owner and gets triggered if a required action is NOT taken before the configured timer hit 0.<br></p><p>= Approve merging by NOT taking action (plan owner is dead)</p></td></tr><tr><td><strong>Plan Trigger</strong></td><td><p>The plan trigger is an activation method employed in backup plans. # Data Backup Plan

Backup Plans allow users to create decentralized backups of their digital data, offering a secure environment for information storage and protection.

<figure><img src="/files/MKVvF5KJYhfBzDuuA2a1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

A Data Backup Plan is a protection plan meant for those desiring to make a "decentralized backup" of their digital data, alone, or together with other shareholders. The data that can be protected with a Data Backup Plan is the same as with a Digital Inheritance Plan, but its plan properties are different.

This plan type allows for flexibility in managing and protecting sensitive information, making it ideal for those who wish to maintain control over their digital assets, either individually or in collaboration with trusted partners.

## Ideal for

Users who need to safeguard active data that is frequently accessed and updated, such as personal information, business data, and operational details.

## Use when

You want to ensure ongoing access to critical data in the face of potential data loss incidents, such as hardware failure, cyberattacks, or accidental deletion.

# Digital Inheritance Plan

Inheritance Plans focus on the seamless and secure transition of digital assets to designated heirs.

<figure><img src="/files/G5TcN8J1OJOFoUk7QKQ2" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

These plans are crucial for managing digital legacies, ensuring that your digital assets are passed on according to your wishes with high security and compliance.

## Ideal for

Users who are preparing for the future management and transfer of their digital assets after their lifetime.

## Use when

You need a secure plan to pass on digital assets like cryptocurrencies, digital wallets, and other sensitive digital data to designated heirs according to your wishes.

# Plan Shares

Understanding the different plan shares in Inheriti®

{% hint style="info" %}
By understanding the various shares within your Inheriti® plan, you ensure robust protection and flexible recovery options for your digital assets, making it tailored to your needs and preferences.
{% endhint %}

When you create a [protection plan](/getting-started/protection-plans), Inheriti® secures your data by splitting it into multiple encrypted pieces, known as plan shares. But what types of plan shares are created, and how do they function within your overall plan?

This page explores the different types of plan shares, including Validator Shares, Beneficiary Shares, Merge Authority Shares, Cold Shares, Mobile Shares, and Recovery Shares.

Each type serves a specific purpose, ensuring that your data is not only protected but also accessible under the right conditions only. Let’s dive into the details of each to understand how they contribute to securing your digital assets.

## Types of shares of a protection plan

### **Validator Share**

The Validator Share acts as a critical security mechanism within your protection plan. It remains securely stored on the blockchain and is only released under the specified conditions of a plan's [activation methods](/getting-started/activation-methods), ensuring that plan activation follows your predefined criteria.

This share helps validate the [merging](/getting-started/merging) process of other shares, ensuring that all actions are authorized and in line with the owner's intentions.

### **Beneficiary Shares**

Beneficiary Shares are all shares distributed among the individuals you designate as beneficiaries.

These shares contain parts of your encrypted data but are not sufficient on their own to access the information.

They ensure that no single beneficiary can access the information alone, safeguarding against unauthorized data retrieval.

#### **Merge Authority Share vs Regular Plan Shares**

In your protection plan, one of the critical roles is that of the Merge Authority, the individual designated to initiate the merging process.

This distinction creates **two specific types of beneficiary shares** within your plan:

* **Merge Authority Share**: This share is uniquely assigned to the Merge Authority. It empowers them to start the merging process of all shares, facilitating access to the protected data. This share is essential for activating the retrieval of encrypted information.
* **Regular Plan Shares**: Held by other beneficiaries, these shares are crucial for data recovery but do not have the authority to initiate the merging process. They can only participate in the recovery process when the Merge Authority activates the merge.

These roles ensure a balanced distribution of power within the plan, safeguarding against unauthorized access and ensuring that the merging process is executed under controlled and intended conditions.

#### **Cold Shares vs Mobile Shares**

When setting up your protection plan, you have the option to choose between two types of storage for your beneficiaries their shares: [SafeKey Pro](/getting-started/safekey/safekey-pro) for Cold Shares and [SafeKey Mobile](/getting-started/safekey/safekey-mobile) for Mobile Shares.

Each type serves a distinct purpose and offers different benefits depending on your security needs and accessibility preferences.

* **Cold Shares**: Stored using SafeKey Pro, Cold Shares provide **the highest level of security** by keeping your encrypted data offline. This method is ideal for those who prioritize maximum security and are concerned about online threats. Cold storage ensures that your shares are physically isolated from the internet, protecting them from cyber attacks and unauthorized online access.
* **Mobile Shares**: For those who need more flexibility and accessibility, Mobile Shares stored via the SafeKey Mobile app are an alternative choice. This option allows you to carry your encrypted shares with you and claim or release them easily from your mobile device.

These different options allow you to tailor your protection plan to fit your lifestyle and security preferences, ensuring that you have the right balance of safety and accessibility for your digital assets.

### **Recovery Shares (optional)**

Recovery Shares are stored on the blockchain together with the Validator Share and provide an additional safety net for your protection plan. They are optional but highly recommended, especially in complex plans with multiple beneficiaries.

In case a Beneficiary Share is lost or compromised, Recovery Shares can be used to complete the data recovery process, ensuring that your data can still be accessed under the designed conditions.

## **How plan shares work together**

The interplay between these different shares forms the backbone of your protection plan’s security.

Each type of share has a distinct role, ensuring that data access is both secure and compliant with your setup. Validator Shares ensure proper authorization, Beneficiary Shares distribute access, Merge Authority Shares control the merging process, and Recovery Shares provide redundancy.

**To set up your protection plan effectively:**

1. Determine the number and role of beneficiaries for your plan.
2. Decide which SafeKey each beneficiary will use, based on your security needs and convenience.
3. Opt for Recovery Shares to safeguard against unexpected scenarios and lost shares.

# Beneficiaries

Understanding everyone's roles and responsibilities

{% hint style="info" %}
Understanding the roles and responsibilities of each beneficiary helps ensure that your protection plan functions smoothly and securely.&#x20;
{% endhint %}

Each participant in a protection plan plays a crucial role, and understanding these roles is key to effectively managing your digital assets. Each role is designed to foster trust and clarity among all parties involved, ensuring that your data is managed and transferred precisely according to your specifications.

By clearly defining these roles within your Inheriti® protection plans, you enhance the security and efficacy of your data management strategy, ensuring that every participant understands their part in safeguarding and inheriting digital assets.

## Roles and responsibilities within a protection plan

### **Plan Owner / Plan Initiator**

This is the individual who creates the protection plan. The Plan Owner has full control and ownership over the plan and is responsible for setting up the terms, choosing beneficiaries, and deciding on the storage and security measures.

As the architect of the plan, the Plan Owner ensures that the plan's setup aligns with their security needs and legacy goals.

### **Beneficiaries**

This broad term encompasses all individuals designated within a protection plan who are entitled to receive access to your data as specified.

Beneficiaries include shareholders and heirs:

* **Heir**: An heir is specifically designated to inherit digital assets under an inheritance plan. This role is vital for ensuring that digital legacies are passed on according to the wishes of the Plan Owner.
* **Shareholder**: In the context of a data backup plan, a shareholder holds a share of the encrypted data. This role is crucial for operational continuity, especially in business contexts where data access needs to be maintained among several stakeholders.

### **Merge Authority**

Within the group of beneficiaries, the Merge Authority plays a pivotal role. This beneficiary is tasked with initiating the merging process of the shares to access or reconstruct the data as outlined in the plan.

The Merge Authority is essential for activating the plan under the predetermined conditions, effectively bridging the gap between secure storage and data retrieval.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you decide to create a backup plan where you are the sole shareholder, you are both the Plan Owner and Merge Authority within the same plan.
{% endhint %}

# Activation Methods

Inheriti® employs several activation methods as an extra security layer for controlled opening of protection plans.

Inheriti® is equipped with sophisticated activation methods designed to safeguard your protection plans by controlling the precise conditions under which they can be opened.

These methods ensure a high level of security and personal control over your protection plans.

## Types of Activation Methods

### Plan Trigger (for Backup Plans)

Employed in [Data Backup Plans](/getting-started/protection-plans/data-backup-plan), Plan Triggers require explicit actions to authorize access to the data.

These are customizable and can be set to respond to various secure actions, providing flexibility and control over data accessibility.

# Ethereum

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/S8lRPgHSO41vUCa7pKyG" alt="" width="428"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

## What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a decentralized blockchain platform known for its robust security and ability to support smart contracts. It is the most widely used blockchain for decentralized applications (dApps), offering a high level of decentralization and security through its vast network of nodes.

Ethereum's native cryptocurrency, Ether (ETH), is used to pay for transactions and computational services on the network. Ethereum's versatility and strong developer community make it a leading choice for various applications, including secure data storage in Inheriti®.

## Why Choose Ethereum for Your Protection Plan in Inheriti®?

When storing encrypted data shares in Inheriti®, Ethereum stands out for its security and decentralization.

**Here’s why you might choose Ethereum:**

### High Security

Ethereum is renowned for its security, with thousands of nodes distributed globally. This widespread network makes it extremely difficult for any single entity to compromise the blockchain, ensuring that your data shares are stored in one of the most secure environments available.

### Strong Decentralization

As one of the most decentralized blockchains, Ethereum minimizes the risk of censorship and central authority interference. For users who prioritize control over their data and want to avoid reliance on a centralized entity, Ethereum provides a trusted platform.

## Why Not Choose Ethereum?

### Higher Costs

Ethereum’s transaction fees, often referred to as "gas fees," can be high, especially during periods of network congestion. This could make storing and managing data shares on Ethereum more expensive compared to other blockchains like Vechain.

### Variable Transaction Speed

While generally secure, Ethereum’s transaction speed can be affected by network congestion, leading to slower confirmation times. Users who require consistent, fast transaction processing may find this variability a drawback.

## Ethereum's Gas Token: ETH

### How It Works

Ethereum uses Ether (ETH) as its gas token to power transactions and operations on the network. When you store or retrieve encrypted data shares on Ethereum via Inheriti®, ETH is consumed to execute these transactions.

### Considerations for Cost

The cost of gas on Ethereum can vary significantly depending on network demand. During peak times, gas fees can spike, leading to higher costs for users.

However, this cost is often justified by the security and decentralization Ethereum provides.

## When to Choose Ethereum?

* **High Security Needs:** If your protection plan involves sensitive or critical data, Ethereum’s robust security and decentralization make it an ideal choice.
* **Complex Protection Plans:** Ethereum is well-suited for users who need advanced smart contract functionality to manage complex inheritance plans or data recovery processes.

## When to Consider Other Options

* **Budget Constraints:** If cost is a primary concern, you may want to consider a more cost-effective blockchain like Vechain, especially if your transactions are frequent.
* **Need for Speed:** For users requiring rapid transaction processing, Ethereum’s occasional delays during high congestion might be a limitation.

# Optimism

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/E558SQkN0x2n4Qo3Xp8o" alt="" width="441"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

## What is Optimism?

Optimism is a layer 2 scaling solution built on top of Ethereum, designed to offer faster and cheaper transactions while maintaining the security and decentralization of Ethereum.

It achieves this by processing transactions off-chain and then batching them to be recorded on the Ethereum mainnet. Optimism uses Ethereum's robust security infrastructure but with enhancements that make it more efficient and cost-effective for high-throughput applications.

## Why Choose Optimism for Your Protection Plan in Inheriti®?

When storing encrypted data shares in Inheriti®, Optimism provides a balance between the security of Ethereum and the efficiency needed for quicker, less expensive transactions.

**Here’s why you might choose Optimism:**

### Lower Transaction Costs

Optimism significantly reduces transaction fees compared to Ethereum by processing transactions off-chain before finalizing them on the Ethereum mainnet.

This makes it a cost-effective option for users who want to enjoy the security of Ethereum without paying high gas fees.

### Fast Transaction Speed

Optimism is designed for high throughput, meaning transactions are processed more quickly than on the Ethereum mainnet alone. This is ideal for users who require swift and reliable transaction processing for their protection plans.

### Security via Ethereum

While operating as a layer 2 solution, Optimism benefits from the security of Ethereum. By leveraging Ethereum’s decentralization, Optimism maintains a high level of security, ensuring that your data shares are protected even as they are processed more efficiently.

## Why Not Choose Optimism?

### Less Decentralized Than Ethereum

Although Optimism relies on Ethereum for security, it is less decentralized on its own. For users who prioritize the highest level of decentralization, storing data directly on the Ethereum mainnet might be preferable.

### Relatively New Technology

Optimism is a newer technology compared to Ethereum and Vechain, which means it may not have the same level of adoption or long-term stability. Users who prefer more established solutions may consider this a potential drawback.

## Optimism's Gas Token: ETH

### How It Works

Like Ethereum, Optimism uses Ether (ETH) as its gas token. However, because transactions are processed off-chain and batched together, the overall gas costs are much lower. This makes it an attractive option for users looking to minimize transaction fees while still benefiting from Ethereum’s security.

### Considerations for Cost

Although significantly cheaper than using Ethereum directly, users should still be aware of the costs associated with gas fees on Optimism. These fees are more predictable and lower, making budgeting for transactions easier.

## When to Choose Optimism?

* **Cost-Effective Security:** If you want the security of Ethereum but need to manage costs, Optimism offers a great balance by lowering transaction fees while still using Ethereum's decentralized network.
* **High-Volume Transactions:** Optimism is ideal for users who need to execute multiple transactions quickly and efficiently without sacrificing too much on security.

## When to Consider Other Options

* **Maximum Decentralization Needed:** If your use case demands the highest possible level of decentralization, Ethereum itself might be the better choice, as Optimism, while secure, is still a layer 2 solution.
* **Preference for Established Platforms:** Users who prefer to stick with more established technologies may opt for Ethereum or Vechain, as Optimism is a newer solution and may carry more risk.

# Merging

Merging is the process within Inheriti® where beneficiaries combine their encrypted plan shares to reveal and access the protected data in a protection plan.

## How Merging Works

### **Initiation by the Merge Authority (MA)**

The merging process begins when the Merge Authority, a designated beneficiary within the protection plan, initiates the merge.

This triggers the countdowns for the[ activation methods](/getting-started/activation-methods) tied to the plan.

### Activation Methods

Depending on whether the protection plan is a Data Backup Plan or a Digital Inheritance Plan, the merging process will involve specific activation methods:

* [**Plan Triggers**](/getting-started/activation-methods/plan-triggers) are used in **backup plans** and require explicit actions (like entering a code or clicking a link) to proceed with the merge.
* [**Dead Man Switch (DMS)**](/getting-started/activation-methods/dead-man-switches-dms) is employed in **inheritance plans** and automatically triggers if the plan owner fails to take a necessary action within the set time frame.

### Combining All Shares

Once the activation methods are successfully triggered, the validator share is released from the blockchain. The Merge Authority, together with the selected beneficiaries, then combines all the required plan shares, reconstructing the data to make it accessible.

### Reveal The Data

The merged shares reveal the original, unencrypted data.

This data is now visible -for a selected maximum amount of time- on the screen of the Merge Authority and thus to all beneficiaries present.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Why Is The Merging Process Important?**

The merging process ensures that the plan owner’s data remains secure and inaccessible until all the correct conditions are met. This process adds an extra layer of security by making sure that no single person or entity can access the data on their own, without permission of the plan owner and other beneficiaries. It’s a crucial part of both protecting and eventually retrieving valuable digital assets.

By carefully configuring the protection plan, selecting trusted beneficiaries, and choosing the right activation methods, the merging process becomes the secure bridge between encrypted data and the moment it’s needed the most.

# SHA Safe Nodes

Earn utility rewards

Safe Nodes serve as both a community appreciation and retention tool, offering a range of benefits to those who maintain a Safe Node over time. By holding a Safe Node, you not only support the network but also unlock exclusive rewards that grow the longer you participate.

[Learn more about the Safe Node Program](https://safehaven.io/sha/safe-nodes/)

[Read the walkthrough](https://safehaven.io/safenode-setup-guide-for-veworld-app-users/)

## Node Rewards

The rewards you earn from Safe Nodes are a way to recognize and reward your loyalty within the Safe Haven ecosystem, including Inheriti®. By maintaining a Safe Node, you demonstrate your commitment by holding and soft-locking your SHA tokens for an extended period. The longer you maintain your node, the more benefits you accrue.

[Discover the different Safe Node tiers](https://safehaven.io/sha/safe-nodes/)

One of these benefits are the utility rewards generated by the SHA ecosystem. These utility rewards are funded through the setup fees for Inheriti® protection plans, which are always covered using SHA tokens from a dedicated pool.

Even when users pay with fiat, a portion of the payment is used to buy back SHA tokens to replenish this pool, ensuring continuous support for the platform.

If users already hold SHA tokens, they can purchase a coupon to offset part of their setup fee. The SHA tokens they use are added directly to the pool, and they will receive an additional 5% discount on the remaining cost of their protection plan, incentivizing the use of SHA tokens.

By holding a Safe Node, you participate in this ecosystem, earning utility rewards over time, which can be easily claimed through the SafeNode mobile app.

This process not only rewards your loyalty but also supports the ongoing utility and expansion of the SHA ecosystem.

## Additional Discounts

When you set up and connect your SafeNode, you’re not just securing your digital assets—you’re also joining a dedicated community that values long-term commitment.

# Secure Share Distribution Protocol (SSDP)

At the core of Inheriti® lies the **Secure Share Distribution Protocol** (SSDP), a cutting-edge and patented technology engineered to ensure the utmost security and reliability in digital asset management.

SSDP is integral to how Inheriti® protects your digital legacy and sensitive data, setting new standards in the industry for encryption and decentralization.

## **How SSDP Works**

### Encryption and Fragmentation

SSDP begins by encrypting data using sophisticated algorithms before splitting it into multiple shares. This fragmentation is done using a technique derived from Shamir's Secret Sharing Scheme (SSSS), ensuring that individual pieces are securely encrypted and independently useless without the others.

### Distributed Storage

Shares are then strategically distributed across various secure and decentralized storage options, including multiple blockchain technologies and cold (offline) storage.

This multilayer approach is designed to leverage the inherent security properties of each medium, enhancing the decentralization, redundancy and resilience of your data.

### Controlled Recovery

SSDP ensures that data can only be accessed by recombining a predetermined number of shares. This process is governed by stringent authentication methods, allowing only authorized beneficiaries to complete the recovery process under predefined conditions.

## Complexity and Confidentiality&#x20;

While SSDP's general workings are transparent, the full details are proprietary and confidential. This includes specific encryption algorithms, share distribution logic, and security checks during the merging process.

By keeping certain aspects undisclosed, Inheriti® enhances its security model, preventing potential vulnerabilities and maintaining a competitive edge.

## Continuous Evolution

The technology behind SSDP is continually refined and updated to adapt to new security challenges and technological advancements.

Keeping details undisclosed allows Inheriti® the flexibility to adjust and enhance the protocol without compromising existing security measures.

## Benefits of SSDP

SSDP's sophisticated design offers significant advantages:

* **Multi-Layer Security:** Combines encryption, fragmentation, and decentralized distribution to protect against unauthorized access and data breaches.
* **User Empowerment:** Allows plan owners to define specific terms for data access and recovery, ensuring that control remains in their hands.
* **Adaptability:** SSDP's flexibility in choosing storage solutions makes it suitable for global application, adhering to various regional regulations and standards.

# Security Barometer

## What is The Security Barometer?

The Security Barometer is a custom algorithm within Inheriti® that provides real-time feedback on the security level of your protection plan during its creation.

While Inheriti® and the [SSDP protocol](/technical/secure-share-distribution-protocol-ssdp) are inherently secure, ensuring that all plans meet a minimum security standard of 80%, the Security Barometer helps you fine-tune your settings to achieve even higher levels of security.

<figure><img src="/files/TPCkSVoERc4x9Cr79IRh" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Understanding the Security Barometer

As you configure your protection plan, the Security Barometer evaluates various parameters and reflects the overall security strength. It offers peace of mind by confirming that your plan is not just secure, but optimized for the highest possible protection of your secret data.

### Parameters That Influence Security

### Beneficiaries

Adding more [beneficiaries](#beneficiaries) increases the difficulty for unauthorized access, enhancing the security of your plan. The Security Barometer will show a higher score as you involve more trusted individuals.

### Recovery Shares

The number of [recovery shares](/getting-started/plan-shares#recovery-shares-optional) is crucial. Fewer recovery shares mean that it’s harder to bypass real [beneficiaries](#beneficiaries). This parameter is given a very high importance, as it significantly impacts the security of your plan.

### Cold Shares

Cold shares are stored on a [SafeKey Pro](/getting-started/safekey/safekey-pro), which are offline and thus provide an additional layer of protection. The barometer will reflect higher security with a greater number of cold shares.

### Mobile Shares

While using the [SafeKey Mobile app](/getting-started/safekey/safekey-mobile) to store mobile shares offers convenience, it is inherently less secure than cold shares due to the vulnerabilities associated with mobile devices. The Security Barometer will indicate a stronger security rating with fewer mobile shares.

### Mobile Shares vs Cold Shares Ratio

Cold shares, which are stored offline on a [SafeKey Pro](/getting-started/safekey/safekey-pro) device, are generally more secure than mobile shares. A higher ratio of cold shares boosts your security rating, reducing the risk associated with mobile device vulnerabilities.

### Merge Threshold

The merge threshold determines how many shares are required to access the data. A higher threshold increases security by necessitating the combination of more shares, making unauthorized access more difficult.

### Activation Methods

Adding more [activation methods](#activation-methods) introduces additional layers of control and security. The more methods you implement, the more secure your plan becomes, as it increases the difficulty for any unauthorized attempt to access your data.

## Achieving Optimal Security

<div align="left"><figure><img src="/files/uYeZn4XAYR7TvZWrQMCN" alt="" width="437"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

The Security Barometer is designed to help you understand and optimize the security of your protection plan. By paying attention to the parameters that influence security and adjusting them accordingly, you can enhance the safety of your digital assets and ensure that your plan is as secure as possible.

While the baseline security level is always 80%, the Security Barometer encourages you to aim higher, guiding you to create a protection plan that not only meets but exceeds standard security requirements.

# Ownership Verification

Ensuring Secure Ownership of Mobile Shares with End-to-End Encryption

Inheriti® takes security seriously, especially when handling encrypted shares across different devices.

While SafeKey Pro shares never leave your browser and are directly distributed to the cold storage device, SafeKey Mobile shares are (temporarily) stored in the Inheriti® Vault before being claimed.

Because these mobile shares pass through the cloud, we've implemented end-to-end encryption and ownership verification to ensure maximum security.

## Why We Use End-to-End Encryption for Mobile Shares

Unlike SafeKey Pro, where encrypted shares are directly sent to the hardware device without ever leaving your browser, mobile shares need to be stored in the Inheriti® Vault until claimed.

This requires an extra layer of protection to secure the data while it's in the cloud. That’s why we use end-to-end encryption to ensure that mobile shares remain safe and secure during this temporary storage process.

<figure><img src="/files/OxCTAP2B4QrKzqfecjFT" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Verification Methods for Mobile Shares

To make sure only the rightful owner can claim the mobile share, we’ve developed multiple ownership verification options:

1. **QR Code Verification**:\
When mobile users receive their share, it's encrypted with a secret key, and a QR code containing that key is sent to the email linked to their SafeID. After claiming the share through SafeKey Mobile, the user must scan this QR code to verify ownership, ensuring the share is only accessible to the rightful owner.
2. **Inheriti® Auto-Verification**:\
For convenience, mobile users can opt for automatic verification. In this method, Inheriti® verifies the mobile share in the background, eliminating the need for the user to manually scan the QR code. The share is verified automatically upon claiming, but this method requires placing trust in Inheriti® to handle verification securely.
3. **Legal Entity Verification (Not available yet)**:\
In future releases, users will have the option to verify their shares through legal entities. This adds an additional level of trust and ensures that mobile share verification is backed by formal legal processes.

## How It Works

Mobile shares are encrypted with a secret key, stored temporarily in the Inheriti® Vault, and verified through QR code scanning or Inheriti® auto-verification.

This multi-layered approach ensures that mobile shares are as secure as SafeKey Pro shares, offering robust protection even when stored in the cloud.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Using a SafeKey Pro?** Encrypted shares never leave your browser and are directly stored on the hardware device in cold storage. No additional ownership verification is needed.
{% endhint %}

# SHA Token Utility

The SHA token is at the heart of Inheriti®, serving as the fuel that powers our innovative digital inheritance and data backup solution. By integrating SHA into our protocol, we ensure a seamless, secure, and efficient Web3 user experience while providing tangible value to our community.

[**Learn more about SHA**](https://safehaven.io/sha/)

## Core Utility in the Inheriti® Ecosystem

### Fueling Protection Plans

Every time a protection plan is created on Inheriti®, SHA tokens are used to power the blockchain smart contracts that execute the plan. Whether you’re setting up a data backup plan or a digital inheritance plan, SHA tokens ensure that the process is decentralized, secure, and immutable.

### Supporting Fiat Payments in Web3

Even if you choose to pay for your protection plan with fiat currency, SHA tokens are still involved behind the scenes. A dedicated SHA token pool is used to fuel the smart contracts, and a portion of your fiat payment is utilized to buy back SHA tokens, replenishing the pool and maintaining the ecosystem’s balance.

This is 100% web3 in web2, and the other way around.

## Incentives for Using SHA

### Discounts through SHA Coupons

For users who already hold SHA tokens, there’s an added incentive to use them directly within the platform. By purchasing a coupon with SHA, you not only contribute to the token pool but also receive a 5% discount on the remaining cost of your protection plan.

This approach benefits both the user and the ecosystem, ensuring that SHA remains an integral part of Inheriti®’s operations.

### Utility Rewards for Safe Node Holders

SHA tokens also play a crucial role in the Safe Haven ecosystem’s node reward system.

By holding and staking SHA in a Safe Node, you can earn rewards over time. These rewards are generated from the utility of SHA within the Inheriti® platform, reinforcing the token’s value and utility.

## A Sustainable Ecosystem

SHA tokens are a critical component of a sustainable and decentralized digital asset protection system. By participating in the SHA token ecosystem, users contribute to the ongoing security and development of Inheriti®, while also reaping the benefits of holding and using SHA.

Whether you’re securing your digital assets or building a long-term digital legacy, SHA tokens provide the utility and incentives needed to make it all possible.

# Inheriti® 2.2

With this update, Inheriti® takes a significant step forward in **expanding accessibility and flexibility** for digital inheritance and data backup management. **The introduction of Free Plans** allows new users to explore the platform, secure their data, and experience Inheriti® without upfront costs. At the same time, **Multiple Merge Authorities** enhance plan activation by enabling multiple beneficiaries to initiate the merging process, improving reliability and accessibility.

This release also includes **various system improvements, security updates, and refinements** to enhance overall usability and performance.

## **New Features**

### **Free Protection Plans**

For many users, **getting started with digital inheritance and secure data storage can feel overwhelming**. With **Free Plans**, anyone can now explore Inheriti® without financial commitment, making it easier to onboard and familiarize themselves with the platform.

<figure><img src="/files/IPayPYFFRrryusK9UMls" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### **What free plans offer:**

* **A simple, no-cost way to create a backup plan** and experience Inheriti® first-hand.
* **Single shareholder setup**, ideal for personal use.
* **SafeKey Mobile storage support** for convenience and security.
* **Encrypt and protect** passwords, private keys, PIN codes or just plain text

While Free Plans provide a strong foundation for digital security, they differ from Paid Plans in one key fundamental way: **the multilayer topology**.

Unlike Paid Plans, where the **validator share is stored on a blockchain of choice**, Free Plans **store the validator share within Inheriti® Vault instead**. This keeps security intact while removing blockchain dependencies, allowing more users to interact with Inheriti® without complexity.

By introducing Free Plans, we aim to **increase adoption, make onboarding easier, and ensure more people can experiment with digital inheritance solutions risk-free**.

### **Multiple Merge Authorities (MA)**

Previously, the **merging process -**&#x74;he crucial step in opening a protection plan and retrieving the secret data- was tied to **a single Merge Authority (MA)**. While this structure worked well, it also introduced **a potential bottleneck** -if the designated MA was unavailable, data retrieval could be delayed or even impossible.

With this update, users can now **assign multiple Merge Authorities**, significantly increasing the **flexibility, security, and accessibility** of protection plans.

#### **Why multiple merge authorities matter:**

* **Increased Redundancy** – If one MA is unavailable, another can step in, ensuring that recovery is never dependent on a single individual.
* **Enhanced Security** – Spreading responsibility across multiple trusted individuals prevents bottlenecks in the recovery process.
* **Better Organizational Support** – This change sets the foundation for future **organization-focused protection plans**, allowing teams and businesses to securely manage their digital assets together.

#### This feature is particularly useful for:

* **Families** managing inheritance plans for multiple beneficiaries.
* **Businesses** ensuring that critical company data remains accessible, even if key personnel are unavailable.
* **Decentralized teams** that require shared access to encrypted data.

By enabling **Multiple Merge Authorities**, Inheriti® strengthens its position as a **secure, flexible, and scalable** solution for both individual and organizational digital asset protection.

### **Data Asset Categories**

We introduced **a structured categorization system for data assets**, making it easier to store and manage sensitive information. This change lays the foundation for **future expansion**, as we plan to support even more asset types over time.

#### **New categories**

To improve clarity and usability, all data assets are now grouped into **five main categories**:

# Inheriti® 2.1.2

This update brings further refinements and fixes to enhance stability, security, and user experience across the platform.

## **Invoice Management Improvement**

We’ve adjusted how invoices are handled for destroyed protection plans.

Invoices will now remain accessible even after a plan is permanently removed, ensuring better financial tracking and record-keeping.

## **Enhanced Security in Support Ticket System**

Following valuable insights from whitehat hackers participating in our ongoing bug bounty program, we’ve added rate limiting to the support ticket system.

This improvement helps prevent potential abuse and enhances platform security.

## **Bug Fixes & Stability Improvements**

We’ve resolved several bugs affecting login, session handling, and UI responsiveness, including:

* Fixed login issues for Brave browser users
* Resolved a rare case where a user session could be unexpectedly taken over

## Merge Page & Login Page Combined

We’ve merged the public "merge page" with the login page, making it easier for Merge Authorities (MAs) to access their assigned plans. Now, whether you’re an MA or a user, you can find the public merge option quicker without needing to search for a separate page.

**Go check it out at** [**https://app.inheriti.com**](https://app.inheriti.com)

## **Improved Merge Authority Access**

Merge Authorities (MAs) can now view and initiate merges for plans they are assigned to, directly from their Inheriti® account.

Previously, MAs had to use the public merge page, but some MAs are Inheriti® users too, so now you can simply log in, go to your overview, and access protection plans where you are the Merge Authority from.

This update is available for both SafeKey Pro and SafeKey Mobile pages. Plan details will still be limited for MAs compared to the plan owner’s view, but it’s a huge step towards streamlining the process.

## Standard vs Advanced Mode

Based on user feedback, we’ve introduced a toggle that allows users to switch between a standard and an advanced view of Inheriti®. The default standard view offers a cleaner, simpler interface. Alternatively, users can opt for the advanced view, which unlocks web3 features, more technical details, and customization options such as share distribution and blockchain storage.

You can enable or disable Advanced Mode in your account settings.

## Helpdesk Support Ticketing System

We’ve made it easier to get help when you need it! You can now create a support ticket within the app and receive updates when our team has resolved your issue.

Support is now just a few clicks away.

## Retrieve Your Account Data

In compliance with GDPR regulations, you can now request a file of your personal data directly from your “My Inheriti” page. This includes account data, plan details (of course not your encrypted secret data, we don't store that!), invoices, and more, giving you full transparency over the data we store.
